Used Nissan Leaf battery health & degradation data
Last updated: · 7 sourced data points
The Leaf is one of the cheapest ways into a used EV in the UK and was the second most popular used EV in 2025. Its battery is passively air-cooled (no liquid thermal management), so battery condition matters more than on most rivals. Sources: Electrifying.com, Recurrent.
Battery options: 24 kWh, 30 kWh (first generation); 40 kWh and 62 kWh e+ (second generation, "ZE1").

Data gaps: No large independent SoH dataset for the 24 kWh and 30 kWh first-generation packs was found for v1. Recurrent (US) reports ~93% of original range after 3 years and ~91% after 5 years across all Leaf generations, but that is range, not SoH, and US climate. Owner contributions for 24/30 kWh cars are especially welcome.
What to check when buying a used Leaf
- Count the capacity bars on the dashboard gauge (12 = new). Missing bars mean lost capacity; below 9 bars is the warranty threshold. (Nissan UK, Recurrent)
- Know which pack you're buying: 24 kWh (early cars), 30 kWh, 40 kWh or 62 kWh e+. Independent model data below is for the second-generation ZE1 (40/62 kWh) only. (Recurrent, AVILOO GmbH)
- Expect a wider spread than most models: AVILOO found the Leaf ZE1 had the widest SoH range of its 20 models (central 99% band 85.4–95.4% at 50,000 km). (AVILOO GmbH)
- In the Swedish Riddermarks data only 61.2% of tested Leaf ZE1 40 kWh cars were above 90% SoH (average mileage 73,610 km) – a test is especially worthwhile. (Ny Teknik / Riddermarks Bil)
- Fast-charging uses CHAdeMO and the air-cooled 40/62 kWh packs can throttle rapid-charge speed after repeated back-to-back rapid charges. (Recurrent)
- Compare any test result with the ranges above and with the ADAC rule of thumb: at least 92% at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, 80% at 200,000 km. (ADAC)
Battery warranty (UK)
Nissan UK: lithium-ion battery state-of-health guarantee covers capacity loss below 9 of 12 bars on the in-car capacity gauge. Pre-MY22 Leaf: 5 years / 60,000 miles. MY22-on Leaf: 8 years / 100,000 miles (whichever comes first). For Leaf Flex (battery lease) customers it applies for the lease duration. Source: Nissan UK, checked 2026-10-20. Model averages can't tell you about the car in front of you. An independent battery test (typically a short OBD plug-in test, some remote) gives an SoH figure and often a certificate you can use when negotiating.
- AVILOO – Independent OBD-based battery test (FLASH / Premium) with certificate; available via partners in the UK and EU.
- Generational – UK remote battery health assessment and certificate, used by dealers and fleets.

FAQ
What battery health is normal for a used Nissan Leaf?
In AVILOO's 2026 report (independent tests, all battery sizes grouped) the median SoH was 91.2% at 50,000 km, 88.3% at 100,000 km and 86.7% at 150,000 km. 99% of tested cars at 100,000 km fell between 80.9% and 93.8%.
What is the Nissan Leaf battery warranty in the UK?
Nissan UK: lithium-ion battery state-of-health guarantee covers capacity loss below 9 of 12 bars on the in-car capacity gauge. Pre-MY22 Leaf: 5 years / 60,000 miles. How can I check the battery of a specific Nissan Leaf?
Use an independent battery test (OBD-based or remote) and compare the result with the ranges on this page. Model averages cannot tell you the condition of one specific car.
