Methodology & sources
Last updated 2026-10-20
What we measure
State of health (SoH) = usable capacity now ÷ usable capacity when new, in %. Different tools measure it differently (car's own battery management system, OBD apps such as LeafSpy, independent tests such as AVILOO, discharge/drive tests), so results for the same car can differ by a few percentage points. ADAC states its AVILOO-based readings have a tolerance of ±3 percentage points (ADAC).
Rules
- We never invent or estimate a number. Every data point is taken from a published source, with that source's publication date and the date we checked it.
- Each point is labelled as a median (large dataset), average (dealer/fleet dataset) or single car (n=1 – an anecdote, not a typical value).
- Mileage is shown in km as published and converted to miles (×0.621).
- Where a source groups several battery sizes, we say so.
- Where no credible data exists, we say so rather than fill the gap.
- Owner contributions are reviewed manually and will be shown separately from published studies once there are enough for a model.
Source types and limits
- Independent test datasets (AVILOO, Generational): large, but cars that get tested are not a random sample.
- Dealer datasets (Carla, Riddermarks – Sweden): cars passing through one retailer; cold climate.
- Long-term tests (ADAC): one car measured repeatedly – great for the curve shape, not for the average.
- Manufacturer data (Tesla): large fleet, but not independently verified.
Use of third-party figures
We quote individual published figures (e.g. a median SoH at a given mileage) as short factual citations, always naming the publisher and linking to the original with its date. We do not reproduce third-party reports, charts, images or logos; all tables and bars on this site are our own presentation of the cited numbers. Figures remain the property of their publishers – please cite them. If you are a publisher and want a figure corrected, attributed differently or removed, email hello@usedevbatteryhealth.com.
