How to check a used MG5 EV battery: size, warranty, recalls and health (UK)
Published · Last updated · based on 20 sourced MG5 data points and 24 sources
The MG5 EV is MG's electric estate, sold in the UK with a Standard Range LFP pack or a Long Range NMC pack. On the 13 UK dealer AVILOO certificates we found (all Long Range), results ranged from 90.9%–95.7%. The bigger questions on a used MG5 are which pack it has, how MG's vehicle 7-year cover differs from the 8-year / 70% high-voltage battery terms, and how an independent test compares with other MG5s. This guide covers each check.

1. Identify the battery
| Version | Usable battery | Nominal | Chemistry | Available to order (EV Database) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MG5 Electric Standard Range | 46.0 kWh | 50.3 kWh | LFP | UK, Feb 2022 – Jun 2025 | EV Database |
| MG5 Electric Long Range | 57.4 kWh | 61.1 kWh | NMC | UK, Jul 2022 – Jul 2025 | EV Database |
| MG5 EV Long Range (pre-facelift) | 57.4 kWh* | 61.1 kWh | not listed on that page | UK, July 2020 – June 2022 | EV Database |
EV Database listings, checked 2026-11-05. *Usable capacity marked as an estimate on the pre-facelift UK page. All 13 of our UK dealer certificates are for the 61.1 kWh Long Range pack.
- The facelift can be either LFP or NMC – go by the battery size on the V5C, the advert or the MG service record, not the look alone.
- Some early Exclusive cars are described by owners as about 53 kWh; treat that as the owner's description unless the service record confirms the pack.
- LFP vs NMC context for MG's other hatchback: MG4 LFP vs NMC.
2. Check the recalls
When we checked DVSA's recall file (DVSA; same MG5 rows in the 2026-10-31 and 2026-11-04 downloads), it listed no high-voltage battery recall for the MG5 EV. The MG5EV rows in the file are:
| Recall | Launched | UK cars | Built | Problem / remedy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R/2021/377 AS-21-03 | 22/11/2021 | 5,803 | 22/06/2020 – 27/08/2021 | Brake lights not activated when regeneratively braking over 1.3 m/s². Remedy: Gateway Module software reflash. Not a battery recall. |
| R/2021/179 | 17/05/2021 | 2,531 Exclusive | 28/07/2020 – 25/02/2021 | Roof bars previously recorded as non-load bearing. Remedy: confirm 35 kg roof load. Not a battery recall. |
At a viewing, still run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration (GOV.UK).
3. Check the battery warranty
MG UK (warranty statement, online version dated 1 Jan 2025): vehicle 7 years / 80,000 miles; HV battery listed at 96 months / 100,000 miles with capacity below 70% treated as excessive loss. Private-hire/taxi registered EVs: vehicle 3 years / 60,000 miles (80,000 miles if registered from 22 Mar 2024), HV battery 8 years / 100,000 miles from 1 Jan 2025 – check how the car was registered. (MG Motor UK, checked 2026-10-30)
- Don't confuse the vehicle warranty (7 years / 80,000 miles) with the high-voltage battery cover (8 years / 100,000 miles, below 70%). The battery terms are the ones that matter for SoH.
- The capacity check is done by an authorised MG repairer. If capacity is below 70%, MG treats it as excessive loss and repairs or replaces the battery with a new or remanufactured one (MG Motor UK).
- MG says a claim can be rejected if the high-voltage battery has been opened by anyone other than an MG authorised New Energy repairer, or if service intervals weren't followed. Ask for the service history.
- Check whether the car was registered as a private-hire vehicle with MG – the general warranty is shorter for those cars. (MG Motor UK).
- Our battery warranty checker works out the time and mileage left from the registration date.
4. Get a battery reading you can trust
- Ask for the SoH on the MG service record and confirm with an independent test. (MGEVs.com owner forum)
- Ask for an independent battery test. AVILOO lists FLASH-test support for the MG5 Electric SR 50.3 kWh and LR 61.1 kWh packs shown above, so a dealer certificate or a mobile tester can give an SoH figure you can compare with the results on this page. (AVILOO GmbH)
- On the 13 UK AVILOO certificates that also print the car's own BMS figure, the two differed by up to about 4.5 points. The car's own figure was higher on 8, lower on 3 and the same on 2.
- An independent test (AVILOO GmbH) gives a figure you can compare with the table below. UK options and prices: UK battery test comparison. To read the result: certificate guide.
5. Compare the result with other MG5s
- No AVILOO median is published for the MG5 itself. Every figure below is a single car (n=1).
- The 13 UK dealer AVILOO certificates (all Long Range 61.1 kWh; 27,962–164,254 km, ≈17,375–102,063 miles) read 90.9%–95.7%. The lowest, 90.9%, was at 52,393 miles; the highest-mileage car (102,063 miles) had 92.0%.
- 7 other single-car results (MGEVS owner threads and one contribution via this site) ranged 91.6%–99.2%. Owner-app rows are not independent tests – treat them as examples only.
- A UK independent result clearly below about 90.9% at similar mileage is worth questioning. Get the car tested again or ask an MG New Energy repairer to check it.
- As a rule of thumb for all EVs, ADAC expects at least 92% at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, 80% at 200,000 km (ADAC).
- Compare the MG5 with other MG models on the battery degradation chart, or get a quick estimate with the battery health estimator.

6. Battery replacement cost (UK)
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new MG5 battery, so we don't quote one. Inside 8 years and 100,000 miles a battery that falls below 70% is covered under MG UK's high-voltage terms (MG Motor UK). For an out-of-warranty car, get a written quote from an authorised MG New Energy repairer before you buy. General UK figures are in our EV battery replacement cost guide.

Model averages can't tell you about the car in front of you. An independent battery test (typically a short OBD plug-in test, some remote) gives an SoH figure and often a certificate you can use when negotiating.
- AVILOO – Independent OBD-based battery test (FLASH / Premium) with certificate; available via partners in the UK and EU.
- Generational – UK OBD plug-in test with certificate (SoH, range, remaining warranty, cell balance); sold through dealers and independent mobile testers.
- Moba – Postal OBD kit: you run the test yourself and post the box back for a digital battery certificate (Europe – check vehicle support and delivery country).

FAQ
What size battery does an MG5 EV have?
EV Database (checked 5 November 2026) lists the facelift MG5 Electric Standard Range at 50.3 kWh nominal / 46.0 kWh usable LFP (UK available Feb 2022 – Jun 2025) and the Long Range at 61.1 kWh nominal / 57.4 kWh usable NMC (UK Jul 2022 – Jul 2025). The pre-facelift MG5 EV Long Range (July 2020 – June 2022) is also listed at 61.1 / 57.4 kWh; that page does not state the chemistry. Check the V5C, the advert or the MG service record for the pack size.
Is there an MG5 battery recall in the UK?
When we checked DVSA's recall file (downloads through 4 November 2026), it listed no high-voltage battery recall for the MG5 EV. The MG5EV rows in the file are R/2021/377 (brake lights during regenerative braking, 5,803 cars) and R/2021/179 (roof-bar load rating on Exclusive, 2,531 cars) – neither is a battery recall. Still run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration.
What is the MG5 battery warranty in the UK?
MG UK's warranty statement (online version dated 1 January 2025) lists the vehicle at 7 years / 80,000 miles and the high-voltage lithium-ion battery at 96 months (8 years) or 100,000 miles, with capacity below 70% of original treated as excessive loss from 1 January 2024. From 1 January 2025 MG says the HV battery is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles in all cases. Private-hire / taxi-registered cars have a shorter vehicle warranty – ask how the car was registered. The warranty transfers to later owners while it lasts.
How much does an MG5 battery degrade?
There is no AVILOO median for the MG5. The 13 UK dealer AVILOO certificates we found (all Long Range 61.1 kWh) read 90.9%–95.7% at 17,375–102,063 miles. 7 other single-car results (owner reports and one contribution via this site) ranged 91.6%–99.2%. Every figure is a single car (n=1), not an average.
Can I trust the MG5's own battery-health figure?
Treat it as a rough guide only. On the 13 UK AVILOO certificates that also print the car's own BMS figure, the two differed by up to about 4.5 points (car higher on 8, lower on 3, same on 2). Prefer an independent test.
How much does an MG5 battery replacement cost in the UK?
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new MG5 battery, so we do not quote one. Inside 8 years and 100,000 miles a battery below 70% is covered under MG UK's high-voltage terms. For an out-of-warranty car, get a written quote from an authorised MG New Energy repairer before you buy.
