How to check a used MG ZS EV battery before you buy (UK)
Published · Last updated · based on 24 sourced ZS EV data points and 36 sources
The MG ZS EV was sold in the UK with three different batteries. This guide covers how to tell which one a car has, the MG battery warranty and its conditions, recalls, the 12V battery issue, and how to compare a battery test with 18 UK dealer-tested cars.

1. Identify the battery
| Version | Usable battery | Nominal | Chemistry | Available to order (EV Database) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ZS EV (pre-facelift) | 42.5 kWh | 44.5 kWh | NMC | 2019–2021 | EV Database |
| ZS EV Standard Range | 49.0 kWh | 51.1 kWh | LFP (MG Motor France) | UK, Feb 2022 – Jul 2025 | EV Database |
| ZS EV Long Range | 68.3 kWh | 72.6 kWh | NMC | UK, Dec 2021 – Jul 2025 | EV Database |
EV Database listings, checked 2026-10-30; the 44.5 kWh car's figures are marked as estimates there. MG UK's July 2022 brochure gives 51.1 and 72.6 kWh for the facelift (MG Motor UK). EV Database doesn't list the Standard Range chemistry; MG France's October 2022 product sheet lists it as LFP and the larger pack as NMC.
The facelifted car (from late 2021) can have either battery, so the look alone doesn't tell you. Go by the battery size on the V5C, the advert or the MG service record. It matters for the comparison: the two facelift packs use different chemistry, and the test results below differ by pack.
2. Check the recalls
When we downloaded DVSA's recall file on 2026-10-30, it listed no recall for the MG ZS EV (DVSA). The only "MG ZS" recall in the file, R/2025/481, is an emissions calibration for the petrol ZS, not the electric car. Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration anyway (GOV.UK).
3. Check the battery warranty
MG UK (warranty statement for cars registered on/after 1 Sep 2019, online version dated 1 Jan 2025): vehicle 7 years / 80,000 miles; the lithium-ion high-voltage battery is listed at 96 months / 100,000 miles with capacity below 70% of original treated as excessive loss. Early ZS EVs (from 2019) may be close to or past the end of cover – confirm the start date and terms for the specific car with MG. (MG Motor UK, checked 2026-10-30)
- The capacity check is done by an authorised MG repairer. If a battery segment is below 70%, MG treats it as excessive loss and repairs or replaces the battery with a new or remanufactured one (MG Motor UK).
- MG says a claim can be rejected if the high-voltage battery has been opened or removed by anyone other than an MG authorised "New Energy" repairer, or if the service intervals weren't followed. Ask for the service history, and ask whether the battery has ever been repaired.
- The warranty transfers to each new owner while it lasts. For private-hire cars the general warranty is shorter, but MG says that from 1 January 2025 the high-voltage battery is covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles in all cases.
- Our battery warranty checker works out the time and mileage left (UK terms (statement dated 1 Jan 2025): 8 years / 100,000 miles, below 70%).
4. Get a battery reading
- Ask for the SoH on the MG service record or read the car's own figure with an OBD app, then confirm with an independent test – car-reported figures are not independently validated. (MGEVs.com owner forum)
- Ask for an independent battery test. AVILOO lists FLASH-test support for the ZS EV 44.5, 51.1 and 72.6 kWh packs shown above, so a dealer certificate or a mobile tester can give an SoH figure you can compare with the results on this page. (AVILOO GmbH)
- One AVILOO FLASH test of a UK 72.6 kWh car in our records was inconclusive and gave no figure; AVILOO advises repeating the test in that case (Car360). Options and prices for independent tests are on our UK battery test comparison (AVILOO GmbH).
- Ask about the 12V battery: owners report repeated flat 12V batteries on some ZS EVs, caused by modules not going to sleep; dealers have applied software updates and hard resets. Check for a recent 12V test and that software updates were done. (MGEVs.com owner forum)
Treat the car's own figure with care. On the 18 UK dealer AVILOO certificates in our data, the car's own (BMS) figure, shown as a whole number, was higher than AVILOO's result on 9, lower on 9 (within 1 point on 10 of them), with gaps from -4.2 to +2.0 points. The biggest gaps were on the 51.1 kWh cars, where the car's own figure was the lower one. Compare like with like, and see how to read a battery health certificate.
5. Compare the result with other ZS EVs
| Pack | UK dealer certificates | Mileage | AVILOO SoH range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 44.5 kWh (2019–2021) | 4 | 10,512–52,732 km ≈ 6,532–32,766 mi | 90.1%–94.3% |
| 51.1 kWh Standard Range (LFP) | 3 | 22,867–78,063 km ≈ 14,209–48,506 mi | 90.7%–92.2% |
| 72.6 kWh Long Range (NMC) | 11 | 5,914–71,907 km ≈ 3,675–44,681 mi | 94.4%–98.0% |
Single AVILOO certificates published by a UK dealer (Car360) for cars it was selling, 2026–2026. They show the spread, not an average – we haven't found an AVILOO median or a dealer dataset for the ZS EV.
- The 72.6 kWh cars in this small sample read higher than the older 44.5 kWh cars, but they are also younger. Compare a car with others of the same pack and similar mileage.
- Nyland's 2019 car lost 11.1% of measured capacity by 74,000 km and 5 years, but it had been used in Bangkok's heat – one car, not a typical value. (Bjørn Nyland / TB Test Results)
- As a rule of thumb for all EVs, ADAC expects at least 92% at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, 80% at 200,000 km (ADAC).
- Compare with other models on the battery degradation chart, or get a quick estimate with the battery health estimator.

Model averages can't tell you about the car in front of you. An independent battery test (typically a short OBD plug-in test, some remote) gives an SoH figure and often a certificate you can use when negotiating.
- AVILOO – Independent OBD-based battery test (FLASH / Premium) with certificate; available via partners in the UK and EU.
- Generational – UK OBD plug-in test with certificate (SoH, range, remaining warranty, cell balance); sold through dealers and independent mobile testers.
- Moba – Postal OBD kit: you run the test yourself and post the box back for a digital battery certificate (Europe – check vehicle support and delivery country).
Prices change – check the provider's site. Provider names are used for identification only. Compare all UK options and prices: EV battery health check UK.

FAQ
Which battery does my used MG ZS EV have?
EV Database lists three packs: 44.5 kWh (about 42.5 kWh usable, NMC) on the 2019–2021 car, and on the facelift from late 2021 a 51.1 kWh Standard Range (49.0 kWh usable) or a 72.6 kWh Long Range (68.3 kWh usable, NMC). MG France's 2022 product sheet lists the Standard Range battery as LFP (lithium iron phosphate) and the Long Range as NMC. Check the V5C, the advert or the MG service record for the size.
What is a good battery health (SoH) for a used MG ZS EV?
There is no large published average for the ZS EV yet. On the UK dealer AVILOO certificates in our data, 72.6 kWh Long Range cars read 94.4%–98.0% (11 cars, 5,914–71,907 km), 51.1 kWh Standard Range cars 90.7%–92.2% (3 cars) and 44.5 kWh cars 90.1%–94.3% (4 cars). These are single cars, not averages. A result well below the others for the same pack and mileage deserves questions.
Is the MG ZS EV battery still under warranty in the UK?
MG UK's warranty statement (dated 1 January 2025) lists the high-voltage battery at 96 months (8 years) or 100,000 miles, with capacity below 70% of original treated as excessive loss. The warranty transfers to each new owner. MG says claims can be rejected if the battery was opened by anyone other than an MG authorised repairer or if service intervals were not followed, so ask for the service history. Early 2019 cars are close to the end of the 8 years – confirm the start date with MG.
Are there battery recalls on the MG ZS EV in the UK?
When we downloaded DVSA's recall file on 2026-10-30 it listed no recall for the ZS EV. The only "MG ZS" recall in the file was an emissions calibration for the petrol ZS. Still run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration.
Does the MG ZS EV show its own battery health?
MG service records and OBD apps can show the car's own (BMS) figure. On the 18 UK dealer certificates in our data the car's own figure was higher than AVILOO's on 9 cars and lower on 9, by up to 4.2 points, so an independent test is the better comparison.
