How to check a used Fiat 500e battery: health, warranty and recalls (UK)
Published · Last updated · based on 15 sourced 500e data points and 26 sources
The electric Fiat 500 (500e) is a popular small used EV in the UK, but there is little published battery data for it. This guide covers how to tell which of the two batteries a car has, the battery recall, Fiat's 8-year warranty, how much to trust the car's own battery figure and every independent test result we could find.
All figures with method and date: used Fiat 500e battery data. Going to a viewing? Make a printable list of questions for the seller.
1. Identify the battery
| Version | Usable battery | Nominal | Cells | Available (EV Database, UK) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500e hatchback and Cabrio, 42 kWh | 37.3 kWh | 42.0 kWh | NMC, 192 prismatic cells | from November 2020 (Cabrio: EV Database) | EV Database |
| 500e hatchback, 23.8 kWh (smaller battery) | 21.3 kWh | 23.8 kWh | NMC, 108 cells | from April 2021 | EV Database |
| Abarth 500e | 37.3 kWh | 42.0 kWh | same pack size as the 42 kWh 500e | from May 2023 | EV Database |
EV Database UK listings, checked 2026-11-01.
- The smaller battery holds about 43% less usable energy, so it matters a lot for range and price. Check the advert, the V5C and the car's specification, and compare a test result only with the same battery. We have only 1 test result for the 23.8 kWh battery.
- Searches for the "2017", "2018" or "2019" 500e battery are about a different car: Fiat said in 2013 that the earlier 500e would be sold only in the United States (Fiat / Stellantis Media, 2013-02-25). This guide covers the 2020-on car sold new in the UK.
2. Check the battery recall
DVSA's recall file, downloaded 2026-10-31, lists one high-voltage battery recall for the 500e (listed as "500 BEV") (DVSA):
- R/2024/434 (18 December 2024): the fastening nut may be missing from the battery's negative pole. That can cause loss of drive or failure to start and, in extreme cases, a fire risk. The fix is a replacement high-voltage battery. It lists 1 UK vehicle, built 23 September 2021 – 13 November 2023.
The file also lists recalls that don't involve the battery: R/2025/319 and R/2025/325 (automatic emergency braking / front camera software on 2024–2025 Fiat and Abarth cars) and R/2022/210 (half-shaft, 2 cars). Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration (GOV.UK).
3. Check the battery warranty
Fiat UK: the traction battery has an 8-year / 100,000-mile warranty. Fiat UK's online store adds that all Fiat electric cars are guaranteed to keep at least 70% battery capacity for 8 years or 100,000 miles, with free repair or replacement if capacity falls below that. The general vehicle warranty is separate (24 months plus a 12-month additional warranty). (Fiat UK; Fiat UK; Fiat UK, checked 2026-11-01)
- Count the 8 years from the first registration date on the V5C. UK orders opened in November 2020, so even the oldest UK cars still have battery warranty left, unless they have passed 100,000 miles.
- Ask for the Fiat service record. Fiat's warranty terms apply; we haven't yet checked the owner handbook's warranty booklet for the exact conditions.
- Our battery warranty checker works out the time and mileage left from the registration date.
4. Get a battery reading you can trust
- On 9 of the 11 dealer AVILOO certificates we found, the car's own battery figure (BMS) was within about 1.5 points of AVILOO's independent result. But one car read 100.0% on its own figure where AVILOO measured 96.3% (AAA Auto). So the car's own number is a useful sign, not proof.
- Owners read the battery with OBD apps such as Car Scanner. Owners on the Fiat500Owners forum say the car's own SoH can be unreliable, and one Italian owner whose car read 89.7% at 110,020 km got a Car Scanner "SoH Low" value of 84.7% (Fiat500Owners.com owner forum; ForumElettrico.it owner forum). Neither is an independent test.
- An AVILOO battery test (AVILOO GmbH) measures the battery independently. UK options and prices are on our UK battery test comparison, and our certificate guide explains how to read the result.
5. Compare the result with other 500e cars
- 13 independent AVILOO tests (UK, Czech and Hungarian cars, 5,075–70,197 km): 91.0%–97.0%. The two UK dealer certificates are 95.8% at 8,550 km and 93.9% at 38,993 km.
- The highest-mileage reading we have is one owner's car at 110,020 km (89.7%, the car's own reading). The same owner's earlier readings were 90.8% at 60,180 km and 89.3% at 95,590 km, so in this one car the figure barely moved after 60,000 km (n=1).
- We have no independent test above about 70,000 km and no 500e dataset with many cars, so we can't give a median. As a rule of thumb for all EVs, ADAC expects at least 92% at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, 80% at 200,000 km (ADAC).
- Compare the 500e with other small EVs on the battery degradation chart, or get a quick estimate with the battery health estimator.

6. Battery replacement cost
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new 500e battery, from Fiat or an independent specialist, so we don't quote one. Inside 8 years and 100,000 miles, Fiat UK says a battery that falls below 70% capacity is repaired or replaced free (Fiat UK), and Fiat's electric servicing page mentions remanufacturing or recycling batteries at the end of their life (Fiat UK). General UK figures are in our EV battery replacement cost guide.

Model averages can't tell you about the car in front of you. An independent battery test (typically a short OBD plug-in test, some remote) gives an SoH figure and often a certificate you can use when negotiating.
- AVILOO – Independent OBD-based battery test (FLASH / Premium) with certificate; available via partners in the UK and EU.
- Generational – UK OBD plug-in test with certificate (SoH, range, remaining warranty, cell balance); sold through dealers and independent mobile testers.
- Moba – Postal OBD kit: you run the test yourself and post the box back for a digital battery certificate (Europe – check vehicle support and delivery country).

FAQ
How do I check the battery health of a used Fiat 500e?
Ask for an independent battery test such as an AVILOO certificate rather than relying on the range shown on the screen. Owners also read the car's own figure with OBD apps such as Car Scanner, but that is the car's own estimate, not an independent test. Check which battery the car has (23.8 or 42 kWh) before comparing the result.
What is a good battery health for a used Fiat 500e?
There is no large published dataset for the 500e yet. The 13 independent AVILOO tests we found (all single cars, 5,075–70,197 km) range from 91.0%–97.0%. One owner reported 89.7% from the car's own reading at about 110,020 km. None of the independently tested cars was below 91.0%, so a clearly lower result at similar mileage is worth questioning.
What is the Fiat 500e battery warranty in the UK?
Fiat UK covers the traction battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles. Its online store says all Fiat electric cars are guaranteed to keep at least 70% battery capacity for that time, with free repair or replacement if it falls below. The general vehicle warranty is separate and shorter (24 months plus a 12-month additional warranty).
Does the 2017, 2018 or 2019 Fiat 500e battery warranty apply in the UK?
The 2013–2019 Fiat 500e was a different, earlier car that Fiat said it would sell only in the United States. The electric 500 sold new in the UK is the newer model from 2020 on, and the Fiat UK battery warranty described here is for that car. For an older imported 500e, ask the seller for proof of what warranty, if any, still applies.
How much does a Fiat 500e battery replacement cost?
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new 500e battery from Fiat or an independent specialist, so we don't quote one. Within 8 years and 100,000 miles Fiat UK says it repairs or replaces a battery that falls below 70% capacity, and Fiat's electric servicing page mentions remanufacturing or recycling batteries at the end of their life.
