MINI Electric (Cooper SE) battery: warranty, size and degradation (UK)

Published · Last updated · based on 29 sourced Cooper SE data points and 33 sources

The first MINI Electric is a popular used city EV with a small battery. This guide covers which battery a car has (and why the 2024-on MINI is different), the MINI UK warranty, the battery recalls, how fast the battery loses capacity in real tests, and how to judge a test result.

90.1%
median battery health (SoH) of the MINI Cooper SE at 100,000 km (≈62,137 mi) in 8,554 AVILOO tests (AVILOO GmbH, 2026-09-03).

Every F56 Cooper SE has the same 32.6 kWh battery, so you can compare any two directly. All the test data on this page is for the F56. The 2024-on Cooper E and SE share the name but are a different car with bigger batteries; we have no test data for them yet.

2. Check the battery warranty

MINI UK: high-voltage battery covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles against defects and excessive capacity loss; the warranty handbook sets the threshold at below 70% as measured by a MINI repairer. (MINI UK, checked 2026-10-31)

3. Check the recalls

DVSA's recall file, downloaded 2026-10-31, lists these battery recalls for the F56 MINI Electric (DVSA):

For the 2024-on Cooper E/SE (J01) the file lists five small high-voltage cell-module recalls between September 2024 and September 2025 (R/2024/366, R/2024/499, R/2025/165, R/2025/187 and R/2025/322; 10–177 UK cars each, also covering the Aceman). Faulty modules are replaced; under R/2024/366 the car must not be charged until it is fixed.

Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration (GOV.UK) and ask for the MINI dealer record showing the work was done.

4. How fast the battery degrades

100,000 km (≈62,137 mi)90.1%82.2%–95.5%

8,554 AVILOO tests of the Cooper SE (AVILOO GmbH, 2026-09-03). The band is the range of the middle 99% of tested cars.

5. Get a battery reading you can trust

On the 21 UK certificates the car's own battery figure (from its battery management system, BMS) was higher than AVILOO's independent result on 18, lower on 0 and within half a point on 3; the car often showed 98–100%. So a high reading from the car or an OBD app is a good sign, not proof.

6. Replacement cost

We have not found a published UK price for a new Cooper SE battery, from MINI or an independent specialist, that shows how it was worked out, so we don't quote one. Inside the warranty a failed or excessively degraded battery is MINI's cost; outside it, get a written quote after diagnosis. Our EV battery replacement cost guide explains what is known.

Model averages can't tell you about the car in front of you. An independent battery test (typically a short OBD plug-in test, some remote) gives an SoH figure and often a certificate you can use when negotiating.

FAQ

What battery size does the MINI Electric (Cooper SE) have?

The first-generation MINI Electric / Cooper SE (F56, ordered in the UK from March 2020 to February 2024) has a 32.6 kWh battery, of which 28.9 kWh is usable, according to EV Database. The new-generation MINI Cooper sold since March 2024 (J01) is a different car: the Cooper E has 36.6 kWh usable (40.7 kWh nominal) and the Cooper SE 49.2 kWh usable (54.2 kWh nominal).

How long is the MINI Electric battery warranty in the UK?

MINI UK covers the high-voltage battery against material defects and excessive loss of capacity for up to 8 years from first registration or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. MINI's 2025 warranty handbook treats capacity below 70%, as measured by a MINI repairer, as excessive. The first cars were registered in 2020, so they reach the 8-year limit from 2028.

What is a good battery health (SoH) for a used MINI Electric?

AVILOO's 2026 report covers 8,554 tests of the Cooper SE: median SoH 94.1% at 50,000 km, 90.1% at 100,000 km and 87.1% at 150,000 km. That is lower than for bigger-battery cars such as the VW ID.4; a small battery goes through more charge cycles per mile, which is one likely reason. On 21 UK dealer AVILOO certificates (9,254–68,489 km) we have 95.2%–97.9%.

Are there battery recalls on the MINI Electric?

Yes. DVSA's recall file (downloaded 2026-10-31) lists two for the F56 MINI Electric: R/2024/279, where the battery housing seal may let moisture in and the battery may switch off while driving (508 hatchbacks built June 2020 – December 2023), and R/2024/337, a battery management software update for insulation faults covering 24,483 cars built November 2018 – January 2024. The 2024-on Cooper E/SE has had several small cell-module recalls. Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration.

How much does a replacement MINI Electric battery cost in the UK?

We have not found a published UK price for a new Cooper SE battery from MINI or an independent specialist that shows how it was worked out, so we don't quote one. Inside the 8-year / 100,000-mile warranty a failed or excessively degraded battery is MINI's cost. Outside it, get a written quote after diagnosis.
