Buying a used Renault Zoe: battery lease (hire) and battery health check (UK)
Published · Last updated · based on 6 sourced Zoe data points and 14 sources
With a used Zoe you have two things to check. First, does the battery come with the car, or is it on a monthly hire agreement with Renault's finance company? Second, how healthy is the battery? This guide covers how a battery lease transfers to you, what buy-out quotes have looked like, how to read the battery's state of health (SoH) and how Zoe results compare with other cars.
All Zoe figures with method and date: used Renault Zoe battery data. Going to a viewing? Make a printable list of questions for the seller.
1. Is the battery owned or leased?
Many Zoes were sold with the battery on a separate hire (lease) agreement, paid monthly. Renault UK's traction battery warranty applies to "i" versions only, where the battery is not subject to a lease agreement. If the battery is leased, separate terms in the lease agreement apply (Renault UK).
Renault's finance arm, Mobilize Financial Services, no longer offers battery leases on new vehicles, but existing agreements continue on older cars such as the Zoe (The Guardian, 2024-12-03). For examples of monthly rentals: a 2018 agreement in one ombudsman case was £59 a month (Financial Ombudsman Service), another from 2018 was £48.98 for a minimum of 36 months, then ended with one month's written notice (Financial Ombudsman Service). The Guardian reader paid £50 a month (The Guardian). These are individual agreements, not a tariff.
- Ask the seller in writing: is the battery owned or hired? If hired, ask for the agreement and the latest Mobilize statement. If "owned", ask for the purchase paperwork or the buy-out confirmation.
- From a dealer: ask them to confirm in writing that the battery is included in the price, or that the lease transfer has been arranged before you pay.
2. Taking over a battery lease: how the transfer works
If the seller hasn't bought the battery out, you would normally take over the hire. In the cases published by the Financial Ombudsman, Mobilize described the process: the seller completes a Battery Hire Transfer Document, Mobilize proposes a new agreement in the buyer's name, and the buyer signs it and returns it with a direct debit mandate (Financial Ombudsman Service). The Guardian also says the new owner has to take over the lease unless the seller ends it first (The Guardian).
Don't drive away until Mobilize has confirmed the transfer. The lease terms quoted in the ombudsman decision tell the seller to make sure the transfer is confirmed before releasing the car, or they stay liable for the payments (Financial Ombudsman Service). Both published cases involved sellers paying months of rentals on cars they had already sold. In one, the transfer took until October 2024 for a car sold in May 2023 (Financial Ombudsman Service). In the other, Mobilize said it had inhibited the battery remotely to get a response from the dealer holding the car (Financial Ombudsman Service). In the second case, though, Mobilize said this can usually only happen when a battery is stolen (Financial Ombudsman Service). Either way, you don't want to own a car whose battery belongs to a company you have no agreement with.
3. Buying the battery out
Existing lease customers can buy the battery, and the Guardian reports that it then comes with a 12-month warranty. The price follows the market value of the components, which Renault determines (The Guardian).
| When | Buy-out quote | Context | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feb 2024 | £2,840.40 | Quoted to the dealer that bought the car (2018 lease) | Financial Ombudsman Service |
| Mar 2024 | £1,586 | Quoted to the owner of an 8-year-old Zoe (reader's account) | The Guardian |
| May 2024 | £2,706.00 | Quoted to the seller in the same case as Feb 2024 | Financial Ombudsman Service |
| Sep 2024 | just over £2,000 | Same Guardian reader, six months later | The Guardian |
Individual quotes, not a price list – they change over time. Ask Mobilize for a current quote on the car you're looking at.
A buy-out quote is also useful when negotiating: a hired-battery Zoe is a different deal from one sold with its battery. If the car ever reaches the end of its life with a hired battery, the Guardian reader was quoted about £400 by a dealer to remove and return the battery (EVA England had heard of about £250) (The Guardian).
4. Read the battery's state of health
The Zoe was sold with several battery sizes (22 kWh, 41 kWh (Z.E. 40), 52 kWh (Z.E. 50)). AVILOO's big dataset groups them all, so ask which one the car has and check it against the documents.
- CanZE app: an open-source app for the Zoe that reads the car's data through a Bluetooth OBD-II dongle and shows state of charge and state of health (CanZE). The project recommends a Konnwei / Maxiscan KW902 dongle on Android ("others may work, most do not"), and a Konnwei Wi-Fi, LeLink BLE or VGate BLE dongle on iOS. It also warns against leaving a dongle plugged in, as an always-powered OBD socket is a security risk (CanZE). Development stopped at the end of 2023, but the app stays on Google Play (CanZE, 2023-12-31).
- The car's figure moves. In a DTU study of one 2013 22 kWh Zoe, the battery management system's SoH varied between 84.0% and 94.0% within a single year (Technical University of Denmark). One reading is a snapshot, so ask for a recent, dated reading with the odometer visible.
- Get an independent test if you can. AVILOO calculates SoH with its own algorithms rather than copying the car's reading (AVILOO GmbH). Test prices are on our buying guide. Ask whether the report includes cell balance, too – in UK tests across all EVs about 1 in 85 cars showed an imbalance above 50 mV (Generational). Our guide to reading a battery health certificate explains each field.
5. Compare the result with what's normal
| Group | Mileage | SoH | Sample | Source (date) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All battery variants grouped | 50,000 km ≈ 31,069 mi | 91.6% 99% of cars: 86.3%–95.0% | n=12,272 median | AVILOO GmbH (2026-09-03) |
| All battery variants grouped | 100,000 km ≈ 62,137 mi | 88.9% 99% of cars: 82.4%–93.0% | n=12,272 median | AVILOO GmbH (2026-09-03) |
| All battery variants grouped | 150,000 km ≈ 93,206 mi | 87.3% 99% of cars: 79.6%–92.2% | n=12,272 median | AVILOO GmbH (2026-09-03) |
| Zoe 40 kWh | avg 79,336 km ≈ 49,297 mi | 90.8% | n=75 average; 61.3% of tested cars above 90% SoH | Ny Teknik / Riddermarks Bil (2026-06-18) |

| Zoe Q210 22 kWh (2013) | >120,000 km ≈ 74,565 mi | 84.0% range in final year: 84.0%–94.0% | n=1 | Technical University of Denmark (2025-06 (EVS38, Gothenburg, 15–18 June 2025)) Single car (n=1). Paper reports SoH consistently above 84%, varying 84–94% in the last year, after 10+ years and >120,000 km. |
AVILOO groups all Zoe battery sizes. Riddermarks reports AVILOO tests of Swedish dealer cars and their average mileage. Single cars (n=1) are examples, not averages. Every row is also on the Zoe data page.
- A common budget used EV in the UK. Independent data places the Zoe among the lower-retention models (smaller pack, more cycles per km), with a wide spread between cars. (AVILOO GmbH, Ny Teknik / Riddermarks Bil)
- As a general rule of thumb for all EVs, ADAC expects at least 92% at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, 80% at 200,000 km (ADAC).

6. Check the battery warranty (owned batteries)
Renault UK (ZOE i, battery owned): 8 years or 100,000 miles. Registered from 1 March 2020: covered if capacity falls below 80% (years 1–3), 70% (years 4–5) or 66% (years 6–8). Registered before 1 March 2020: below 66%. Leased batteries have separate terms in the lease agreement. (Renault UK, checked 2026-10-26)
Note the stepped threshold on cars registered from 1 March 2020: what counts as a warranty claim depends on the car's age. Our battery warranty checker works out the time and mileage left (Battery owned, registered from 1 Mar 2020: 8 years / 100,000 miles, below 80% (years 1–3), 70% (years 4–5), 66% (years 6–8); Battery owned, registered before 1 Mar 2020: 8 years / 100,000 miles, below 66%). For a hired battery, the lease agreement sets the terms – ask Mobilize what applies. And run a free GOV.UK recall check on the registration (GOV.UK).

Model averages can't tell you about the car in front of you. An independent battery test (typically a short OBD plug-in test, some remote) gives an SoH figure and often a certificate you can use when negotiating.
- AVILOO – Independent OBD-based battery test (FLASH / Premium) with certificate; available via partners in the UK and EU.
- Generational – UK OBD plug-in test with certificate (SoH, range, remaining warranty, cell balance); sold through dealers and independent mobile testers.
- Moba – Postal OBD kit: you run the test yourself and post the box back for a digital battery certificate (Europe – check vehicle support and delivery country).
Prices change – check the provider's site. Provider names are used for identification only.

FAQ
How do I know if a used Renault Zoe has a leased battery?
Ask the seller directly and ask to see either the battery hire agreement and latest statement from Mobilize Financial Services (Renault’s finance company), or proof that the battery was bought outright. Renault UK’s battery warranty applies only to “i” versions, where the battery is not subject to a lease agreement. Do not rely on the advert wording alone.
Can I buy a used Zoe and take over the battery lease?
Yes, that is the normal route if the seller has not bought the battery out. In cases published by the Financial Ombudsman, Mobilize needed a completed Battery Hire Transfer Document, then sent the buyer a new agreement to sign and return with a direct debit mandate. The seller stays liable until Mobilize confirms the transfer, so don’t take the car before that.
How much does it cost to buy out a Zoe battery lease?
There is no published price list. The figures we found are individual quotes: a Guardian reader was quoted £1,586 in March 2024 and just over £2,000 that September, and an ombudsman case shows quotes of £2,840.40 and £2,706.00 in 2024. The Guardian reports that Renault sets the value and that a bought-out battery comes with a 12-month warranty. Ask Mobilize for a quote for the specific car.
What battery warranty does a used Renault Zoe have?
Renault UK (ZOE i, battery owned): 8 years or 100,000 miles. Registered from 1 March 2020: covered if capacity falls below 80% (years 1–3), 70% (years 4–5) or 66% (years 6–8). Registered before 1 March 2020: below 66%. Leased batteries have separate terms in the lease agreement.
