How to check a used VW ID.4 battery: size, recalls, warranty and health (UK)
Published · Last updated · based on 25 sourced ID.4 data points and 31 sources
The ID.4 is one of the most common used electric SUVs in the UK. It shares the MEB platform with the ID.3, Enyaq and CUPRA Born, and it has a large published test dataset. This dedicated guide covers how to tell which battery a car has (including the newer 58 and 79 kWh packs), the 2026 UK battery recalls and the temporary 80% charge cap, Volkswagen's 8-year warranty, and how to compare a test result with AVILOO's data from 24,445 tested ID.4s. For the hatchback sister, see the ID.3 battery check guide.

1. Identify the battery
| Usable battery | Gross | Cells | Listed (EV Database UK) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 52 kWh Pure (NMC) | 55 kWh | 192 (96s2p) NMC | UK orders Jun 2021 – Nov 2023 (MY26 Pure still 52 kWh NMC) | EV Database |
| 77 kWh Pro / Pro Performance (NMC) | 82 kWh | 288 (96s3p) NMC | UK orders May 2021 – Nov 2023 | EV Database |
| 77 kWh Pro / GTX MY24–25 (NMC) | 82 kWh | 288 (96s3p) NMC | UK Nov 2023 – Jul 2025 (GTX same usable size) | EV Database |
| 79 kWh GTX MY26 (NMC) | 84 kWh | 192 (96s2p) NMC | UK Jul 2025 – Apr 2026 | EV Database |
| 79 kWh Pro MY27 (NMC) | 84 kWh | 192 (96s2p) NMC | UK from Apr 2026 | EV Database |
| 58 kWh Pure MY27 (LFP) | 61 kWh | 208 (104s2p) LFP | UK from Apr 2026 | EV Database |
EV Database UK listings, checked 2026-11-07. Each size was sold in several model years; the table shows one listing per distinct usable size / chemistry. Early and mid-life cars are on a 400 V NMC pack; the MY27 Pure switches to LFP. Trim names changed over the years, so go by the battery size on the V5C, the advert or the service book, not the badge.
- Compare a test result only with the same pack. Most of our single-car UK certificates are 52 or 77 kWh.
- The ID.4 shares its packs and platform with the Škoda Enyaq and, for the hatchback, the ID.3.
2. Check the battery recalls
When we checked DVSA's recall file downloaded on 2026-10-31, it listed two high-voltage battery recalls that include the ID.4 (DVSA):
| DVSA recall | Launched | Problem | Fix / interim | ID.4 cars and build dates |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R/2026/397 (VW 93MF) | 14/10/2026 | HV batteries from a certain supplier may have components that don't meet VW's standards; in rare cases the battery may overheat at a high charge level. | Charge limited to 80% until checked; warning stickers | 55 ID.4s built 21/11/2022 – 29/10/2024 |
| R/2026/398 (VW 93MV) | 14/10/2026 | Same issue; workshop reads an ODIS diagnostic log and lifts the 80% limit if the battery is normal, otherwise replaces affected modules. | Workshop check; keep 80% cap until cleared | 24 ID.4s built 15/01/2024 – 17/09/2024 |
Volkswagen UK runs these as safety recall campaigns 93MV and 93MF for ID.3, ID.4 and ID.7 cars whose batteries came from one supplier between 2022 and 2025. It says charging above 80% may cause overheating and a fire risk, so it is temporarily capping affected cars at 80%, in most cases over the air; the car has to be online, with privacy settings off and the ignition on for at least five minutes, for the cap to arrive. Volkswagen reports no confirmed injuries but individual cases of property damage, writes to owners about a free dealer check, and replaces battery modules or updates software as needed (Volkswagen UK, checked 2026-11-07).
- Quick check at a viewing: Volkswagen says that if the cap is active, the charge-limit slider in the app or infotainment won't stay above 80% and slips back below it.
- Shared MEB context (ID.3 rows on the same campaigns, plus earlier ID.3-only battery recalls) is covered in the combined ID.3 guide.
- Other ID.4 recalls in the file are not about the battery (for example R/2021/409 steering bush, R/2024/221 seat bolts, R/2025/516 door-handle software).
- Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration (GOV.UK). If the car is affected, ask whether the work has been done and for the dealer's record. A car that is still limited to 80% will show less range on a test drive, and a battery test taken before the repair may not reflect the battery after it.
3. Check the battery warranty
Volkswagen UK covers the high-voltage battery of every ID. model for 8 years or 100,000 miles from first registration (whichever comes first): if a VW authorised repairer measures less than 70% of the original energy content, it is repaired or replaced. The warranty passes to later owners. (Volkswagen UK, checked 2026-11-07; Volkswagen UK)
- The warranty runs from handover to the first customer or first registration, whichever is earlier. The 70% is measured by a Volkswagen authorised repairer, not by a third-party test.
- A warranty repair brings the battery back to at least 78% of its starting energy content up to 3 years or 40,000 miles, 74% up to 5 years or 60,000 miles, and 70% up to 8 years or 100,000 miles, depending on the car's age and mileage when it is diagnosed (Volkswagen UK).
- VW's terms exclude loss caused by unauthorised work on the battery, not charging or maintaining it as the owner's manual says, fire, or excessive water such as pressure-washing the battery.
- Volkswagen says an Approved Used electric VW gets a multipoint check and a battery health certificate (Volkswagen UK). If you're buying from a VW dealer, ask for it.
- Our battery warranty checker works out the time and mileage left (All ID. models (UK): 8 years / 100,000 miles, below 70%).
4. Get an independent reading
A VW workshop can read the battery's health with its diagnostic tool (ODIS), and owners read the battery's energy content with OBD apps. Owner reports in our data include 2 VW workshop or dealer readings, for example 91.0% on an ID.4 (4.5 years old) at 70,000 km (Bolidenforum.de, n=1); 87.0% on an ID.4 1st Max 77 kWh (06/2021) at 105,069 km (meinID.com VW ID Forum wiki, n=1). On one ID.4 in a German forum thread the dealer reported 91% and an AVILOO test of the same car showed 93% (Bolidenforum.de).
Different methods give different numbers, so compare like with like: an AVILOO result with AVILOO data, a VW reading with VW readings. AVILOO calculates SoH with its own method rather than copying the car's figure (AVILOO GmbH). Riddermarks: 95.4% of 588 ID.4 77 kWh cars tested were above 90% SoH (average 80,321 km). (Ny Teknik / Riddermarks Bil) Test options and prices are on our buying guide, and how to read a battery health certificate explains each field.
5. Compare the result with what's normal
| Group | Mileage / age | SoH | Sample | Measured by | Source (date) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| All battery variants grouped | 50,000 km ≈ 31,069 mi | 95.2% central 99% of cars: 88.9%–97.9% | n=24,445 (all mileages) median, all batteries | AVILOO FLASH Test | AVILOO GmbH (2026-09-03) |
| All battery variants grouped | 100,000 km ≈ 62,137 mi | 92.5% central 99% of cars: 85.9%–96.1% | n=24,445 (all mileages) median, all batteries | AVILOO FLASH Test | AVILOO GmbH (2026-09-03) |
| All battery variants grouped | 150,000 km ≈ 93,206 mi | 90.8% central 99% of cars: 83.4%–94.9% | n=24,445 (all mileages) median, all batteries | AVILOO FLASH Test | AVILOO GmbH (2026-09-03) |
| ID.4 77 kWh | 50,000 km ≈ 31,069 mi | 95.4% | multi-car median for 77 kWh | AVILOO FLASH Test | AVILOO GmbH (2026-09-03) |
| ID.4 77 kWh | 100,000 km ≈ 62,137 mi | 92.7% | multi-car median for 77 kWh | AVILOO FLASH Test | AVILOO GmbH (2026-09-03) |
| ID.4 77 kWh | 150,000 km ≈ 93,206 mi | 90.9% | multi-car median for 77 kWh | AVILOO FLASH Test | AVILOO GmbH (2026-09-03) |
| ID.4 77 kWh | 80,321 km ≈ 49,909 mi | 93.6% | n=588 | AVILOO quick test (dealer) | Ny Teknik / Riddermarks Bil (2026-06-18) 95.4% of tested cars above 90% SoH. Mileage is the average of tested cars. |
| ID.4 77 kWh | 100,000 km ≈ 62,137 mi | 92.8% | multi-car | AVILOO test (dealer) | Carla AB (2026-07-08) Average of tested cars with more than 100,000 km; sample size per model not published. |
| ID.4 77 kWh (software 3.x) | 100,000 km ≈ 62,137 mi | 92.3% | multi-car | AVILOO test (dealer) | Carla AB (2026-07-08) Average of tested cars with more than 100,000 km; sample size per model not published. |
AVILOO medians are the middle value of tested cars at that mileage; the band shows where the central 99% of cars fall. Riddermarks (588 dealer tests, average 80,321 km, mean 93.6%) and Carla are averages from dealer tests.
- At 150,000 km the central 99% of tested ID.4s ran from 83.4% to 94.9%, so a good model average doesn't guarantee a good car.
- As a rule of thumb for all EVs, ADAC expects at least 92% at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, 80% at 200,000 km (ADAC).
- Compare the ID.4 with its MEB sisters on the battery degradation chart, or get a quick estimate with the battery health estimator.

6. Battery replacement cost (UK)
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new ID.4 battery from Volkswagen, so we don't quote one. Inside the warranty, a battery below 70% capacity is Volkswagen's to repair or replace (Volkswagen UK). For an older, higher-mileage car outside cover, get a written quote from a VW dealer or an EV battery specialist before you buy. General UK figures are in our EV battery replacement cost guide.

Model averages can't tell you about the car in front of you. An independent battery test (typically a short OBD plug-in test, some remote) gives an SoH figure and often a certificate you can use when negotiating.
- AVILOO – Independent OBD-based battery test (FLASH / Premium) with certificate; available via partners in the UK and EU.
- Generational – UK OBD plug-in test with certificate (SoH, range, remaining warranty, cell balance); sold through dealers and independent mobile testers.
- Moba – Postal OBD kit: you run the test yourself and post the box back for a digital battery certificate (Europe – check vehicle support and delivery country).

FAQ
Which battery does my used VW ID.4 have?
EV Database UK lists four usable sizes on the ID.4: 52 kWh (Pure, NMC, 2021–MY26), 58 kWh (Pure MY27 LFP from April 2026), 77 kWh (Pro / Pro Performance / GTX through MY26) and 79 kWh (GTX MY26 and Pro MY27). Check the advert, the V5C and the service book, and compare any health figure with data for the same battery.
What is a good battery health (SoH) for a used ID.4?
In AVILOO's 2026 report the median at 100,000 km was 92.5% from 24,445 ID.4 tests (all battery sizes grouped), with the central 99% of cars between 85.9% and 96.1%. For the 77 kWh pack alone the deep-dive median at the same mileage was 92.7%. A car well below the median at its mileage deserves questions.
Is a used ID.4 battery still under warranty in the UK?
Volkswagen UK covers the high-voltage battery of every ID. model for 8 years or 100,000 miles from first registration, whichever comes first. If a Volkswagen authorised repairer measures less than 70% of the original energy content in that time, the battery is repaired or replaced. The warranty can be passed on to later owners.
Are there battery recalls on the ID.4 in the UK?
Yes. When we checked DVSA's recall file (downloaded 2026-10-31) it listed two high-voltage battery recalls that include the ID.4: R/2026/397 (55 ID.4s, charge limited to 80% until checked) and R/2026/398 (24 ID.4s, same issue with a workshop diagnostic). Volkswagen UK runs these as campaigns 93MV/93MF. Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration.
Can I trust the ID.4's own battery figure?
Not on its own. On the 9 UK Car360 / AVILOO certificates in our data that also print the car's own BMS figure, the independent SoH and the car's figure often differ by a point or two. Get an independent test or a VW ODIS reading and compare like with like.
How much does an ID.4 battery replacement cost in the UK?
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new ID.4 battery from Volkswagen, so we do not quote one. Inside the warranty, a battery below 70% capacity is Volkswagen's responsibility. Outside it, get a written quote from a VW dealer or an EV battery specialist before you buy.
