How to check a used CUPRA Born battery: size, recalls and warranty (UK)
Published · Last updated · based on 14 sourced Born data points and 24 sources
The CUPRA Born shares the VW ID.3's MEB platform and batteries. In 2026 it picked up three UK battery recalls, one of which limits charging to 80% on affected cars. This guide covers how to tell which battery a car has, how to check the recalls, CUPRA's 8-year warranty, how far to trust the car's own battery figure and how a result compares with AVILOO's data from 7,443 tested Borns.
All figures with method and date: used CUPRA Born battery data. Going to a viewing? Make a printable list of questions for the seller.
1. Identify the battery
| Version | Usable battery | Nominal | Cells / chemistry | Available to order (EV Database, UK) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Born 58 kWh (incl. e-Boost) | 58.0 kWh | 62.0 kWh | 216 cells, NMC | April 2022 – July 2024 | EV Database |
| Born 77 kWh e-Boost | 77.0 kWh | 82.0 kWh | 288 cells, NMC | April 2022 – July 2025 (same pack in the MY25 listing) | EV Database |
| Born 59 kWh e-Boost (MY25) | 59.0 kWh | 63.0 kWh | 216 cells, NMC | July 2024 – April 2026 | EV Database |
| Born 79 kWh e-Boost and VZ (MY25) | 79.0 kWh | 84.0 kWh | 288 cells, NMC | July 2024 – April 2026 | EV Database |
| Born 140 kW 58 kWh (MY27) | 58.0 kWh | 61.0 kWh | 208 cells, LFP | since May 2026 | EV Database |
| Born 170 kW 79 kWh and VZ (MY27) | 79.0 kWh | 84.0 kWh | 192 cells, NMC | since May 2026 | EV Database |
EV Database UK listings, checked 2026-11-02. Some dealer certificates describe a Born as "60 kWh", which is not one of EV Database's pack sizes, so confirm the battery from the specification.
- The 58/59 kWh and 77/79 kWh packs differ by about a third in usable energy, so check the advert, V5C and specification, and compare a test result only with the same battery.
- The 2026 58 kWh Born uses a different chemistry (LFP) from the earlier NMC packs, and AVILOO's dataset groups all versions together. We have no test results for the LFP Born yet.
2. Check the battery recalls
DVSA's recall file, downloaded 2026-10-31, lists three CUPRA Born recalls for the high-voltage battery (DVSA):
- R/2026/153 (9 April 2026): a high-voltage battery module may not meet quality standards, which can mean much less range, a yellow warning light or overheating inside the battery that could cause a fire. Dealers check the battery and replace faulty modules. DVSA lists 1,886 UK vehicles built 22 September 2022 – 15 April 2024.
- R/2026/040 (4 February 2026): a faulty module may have been fitted, with the same risks; modules are checked and replaced. It lists 2 vehicles built 9 February 2023.
- R/2026/396 (14 October 2026, CUPRA reference 93W4): batteries from an affected supplier batch may have manufacturing problems. Owners get a letter and warning labels and are told not to charge above 80% (Battery Care Mode), and CUPRA limits the maximum charge to 80% remotely where it can. DVSA lists 495 vehicles built 12 September 2022 – 16 May 2024.
CUPRA UK's recall page says the 80% limit is pushed over the air (the car must be online with privacy settings off) and that you can tell it is active because the charge-limit slider won't stay above 80% (CUPRA UK, checked 2026-11-02). At a viewing, try setting the limit to 100% in the car: if it springs back to 80%, the car is in this recall, so ask what work has been done since. Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration (GOV.UK) and ask for proof the battery work was done.
3. Check the battery warranty
CUPRA UK: battery covered if capacity falls below 70% within 8 years or 100,000 miles. Cars bought with the UK Electric Car Grant from 2025 get an extra cover: below 80% within 3 years or 40,000 miles. CUPRA also offers to extend the battery warranty for two more years, at extra cost, when the cover ends. (CUPRA UK, checked 2026-11-02)
- Count the 8 years from the first registration date on the V5C.
- Ask for the CUPRA service history and the recall work above, and check with a CUPRA retailer using the VIN.
- Our battery warranty checker works out the time and mileage left from the registration date.
4. Get a battery reading you can trust
- On the 9 UK dealer AVILOO certificates we found, the car's own battery figure (BMS) was lower than AVILOO's independent result on 7 of them, by up to 3.3 points, and equal to or above it on the other 2. That's a small sample (n=1 each), so treat the car's own number as a rough sign, not proof.
- Owners and dealers also read the battery with OBD apps (CUPRA Born Forum – born-forum.de) or dealer diagnostic tools (CUPRA Born Forum – cuprabornforums.com). Ask which tool produced a number and how it was worked out.
- An AVILOO battery test (AVILOO GmbH) measures the battery independently. UK options and prices are on our UK battery test comparison, and our certificate guide explains how to read the result.
5. Compare the result with other Borns
- 50,000 km (≈31,069 mi): median 94.8%, central 99% of cars 89.6%–98.6%
- 100,000 km (≈62,137 mi): median 93.0%, central 99% of cars 87.0%–97.0%
- 150,000 km (≈93,206 mi): median 91.9%, central 99% of cars 84.9%–95.9%
AVILOO 2026 data, 7,443 Born tests, all battery versions grouped (AVILOO GmbH).
- A result well below the median at similar mileage is worth questioning, and one near or below the bottom of the range should be checked with an independent test before you buy.
- For comparison, AVILOO's median at 100,000 km is 92.8% for the Volkswagen ID.3, 92.7% for the Škoda Enyaq iV, 92.5% for the Volkswagen ID.4, which are built on the same MEB platform.
- As a rule of thumb for all EVs, ADAC expects at least 92% at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, 80% at 200,000 km (ADAC).
- Compare the Born with its MEB sisters on the battery degradation chart, or get a quick estimate with the battery health estimator.

6. Battery replacement cost
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new Born battery, from CUPRA or an independent specialist, so we don't quote one. Inside 8 years and 100,000 miles, a battery that falls below 70% capacity is covered by CUPRA's warranty (CUPRA UK), and the battery is made of modules that can be replaced one at a time, as recall R/2026/153 does. General UK figures are in our EV battery replacement cost guide.

Model averages can't tell you about the car in front of you. An independent battery test (typically a short OBD plug-in test, some remote) gives an SoH figure and often a certificate you can use when negotiating.
- AVILOO – Independent OBD-based battery test (FLASH / Premium) with certificate; available via partners in the UK and EU.
- Generational – UK OBD plug-in test with certificate (SoH, range, remaining warranty, cell balance); sold through dealers and independent mobile testers.
- Moba – Postal OBD kit: you run the test yourself and post the box back for a digital battery certificate (Europe – check vehicle support and delivery country).

FAQ
What is the CUPRA Born battery warranty in the UK?
CUPRA UK covers the Born's high-voltage battery if its capacity drops below 70% within 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Cars bought with the UK Electric Car Grant from 2025 also get cover if capacity is below 80% at 3 years or 40,000 miles. CUPRA also offers to extend the battery warranty by two years, at extra cost, when the cover ends.
What size battery does a used CUPRA Born have?
According to EV Database's UK listings, 2022–2024 cars have a 58 kWh (62 kWh nominal) or 77 kWh (82 kWh nominal) NMC battery, 2024–2026 cars a 59 kWh or 79 kWh battery, and the 2026 MY27 Born a 58 kWh LFP or 79 kWh NMC battery. Compare health results only with the same battery.
Are there CUPRA Born battery recalls in the UK?
Yes. DVSA lists R/2026/153 (a battery module may not meet quality standards; battery check and module replacement, 1,886 cars built September 2022 – April 2024), R/2026/040 (faulty module, 2 cars) and R/2026/396 (October 2026: charging limited to 80% for safety on 495 cars with batteries from an affected batch). Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration.
How much does a CUPRA Born battery degrade?
AVILOO's 2026 data from 7,443 Born tests has a median battery health of 93.0% at 100,000 km, with the central 99% of cars between 87.0% and 97.0%.
How much does a CUPRA Born battery replacement cost?
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new Born battery, so we do not quote one. Inside 8 years and 100,000 miles a battery below 70% is covered by CUPRA's warranty, and the MEB battery is built from modules, so faults are often fixed by replacing modules, as in recall R/2026/153.
