How to check a used Tesla Model X battery: size, warranty and health (UK)
Published · Last updated · based on 6 sourced Model X data points and 23 sources
The Model X has been on UK roads since late 2016. A This is Money analysis of DVSA MOT records counted 491 UK Model X cars over 100,000 miles. In Carla's Swedish dealer data, Model X cars tested after more than 100,000 km averaged 92.5% battery health. This guide covers which pack a car has, which warranty it is on, how real cars have degraded, what a UK replacement is reported to cost, and what to check before you buy.

1. Identify the battery
| Version | Usable battery | Nominal | Available (EV Database, UK) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Model X 60D (software-limited) | 62.0 kWh | 75.0 kWh | Oct 2016 – Feb 2017 | EV Database |
| Model X 75D | 72.5 kWh | 75.0 kWh | Oct 2016 – Sep 2018 | EV Database |
| Model X 90D / P90D | 85.5 kWh | 90.0 kWh | Oct 2016 – Jun 2017 | EV Database |
| Model X 100D / P100D | 95.0 kWh | 100.0 kWh | Jan 2017 – Feb 2019 | EV Database |
| Model X Long Range / Performance | 95.0 kWh | 100.0 kWh | Jun 2019 – Oct 2020 | EV Database |
| Model X Long Range Plus | 98.0 kWh | 103.0 kWh | Nov 2020 – Mar 2021 | EV Database |
| Model X Dual Motor / Plaid | 95.0 kWh | 100.0 kWh | Jan 2024 – Jul 2025 | EV Database |
EV Database UK listings, Dual Motor page checked 2026-11-06. Nickel-based cylindrical cells. EV Database lists NCA for the 2019-on Long Range, Long Range Plus and 2024–2025 cars, with Panasonic 18650 cells on the 2024–2025 Dual Motor and Plaid; it gives no chemistry for earlier cars.
- Compare a test result only with the same pack. The badge on older cars (60D, 75D, 90D, 100D, with P for performance) gives a clue; later Long Range, Dual Motor and Plaid cars need the Tesla app, screen or V5C.
- We have no independent results yet for 2020-on Model X cars in our dataset – every certificate and capacity test below is for earlier packs.
2. Check which battery warranty the car is on
Tesla's European warranty (Europe region, which includes the UK; document effective 8 July 2024): Model S and Model X battery and drive unit – 8 years or 240,000 km (about 150,000 miles), whichever comes first, with a minimum 70% battery capacity retention over the warranty period. EV Database's UK listings give 8 years / 150,000 miles for 2019-on cars. Cars bought earlier stay on the battery warranty that applied when they were bought; Electrek reported that early Model S/X terms were 8 years with unlimited miles but no capacity-loss guarantee. Check the warranty end date in the Tesla app or with Tesla using the VIN. (Tesla; Tesla UK; Electrek)
- Tesla's European warranty document (effective 8 July 2024, Europe region including the UK) and Tesla's UK support page both give the Model X battery and drive unit 8 years or about 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever comes first, with at least 70% capacity retention. Repairs can use new, reconditioned or remanufactured parts.
- Cars bought earlier keep the battery warranty that applied when they were bought. Electrek reported in 2020 that early Model S/X terms were 8 years with unlimited miles but didn't cover capacity loss. That is a US report, so confirm a UK car's terms with Tesla.
- The 8 years run from the car's first delivery. Many 2016–2018 Model X cars are now outside their battery warranty, so a battery fault is the buyer's cost. Ask Tesla (with the VIN) or check the Tesla app for the end date, or use our battery warranty checker.
3. Check for recalls
When we checked DVSA's recall file (DVSA; Model X rows re-checked 2026-11-06 against the 2026-10-31 download), it listed no high-voltage battery recall for the Model X. Model X campaigns in that file include seats that may not latch (R/2017/284), passenger airbag software (R/2017/191), parking-brake calipers (R/2017/182), the media-unit memory chip (R/2021/031), brake-fluid sensing (R/2023/351), first-row seat-belt pretensioner reconnection (R/2023/350), post-crash eCall firmware (R/2025/075) and a single-vehicle rear-view camera campaign (R/2025/049). None of those is a pack recall. Run the free GOV.UK recall check (GOV.UK) and ask Tesla to confirm the VIN is clear.
4. How much do Model X batteries degrade?
| Data set | Cars | Mileage | SoH | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swedish retailer AVILOO tests, cars over 100,000 km | not published | over 100,000 km | 92.5% average | Carla AB (2026-07-08) |
| Czech dealer AVILOO certificates | 3 (one each) | 140,874–182,749 km (≈87,535–113,555 miles) | 83.3%–86.8% range | single certificates |
| Bjørn Nyland's capacity tests | 2 (one each) | 99,000–192,000 km | 81.7%–93.5% range | Bjørn Nyland / TB Test Results |
- There is no large published Model X dataset (no AVILOO median, no UK-only fleet study), so these figures show the spread, not a reliable average. The single-car rows are n=1 each.
- On all 3 Czech AVILOO certificates the car's own battery figure (BMS) was higher than the independent result: 84.0% vs 83.3%, 92.0% vs 86.8%, 89.0% vs 84.8%. So don't accept the car's own number, or a range estimate on the screen, as proof.
- High mileage is common enough on UK Model X cars that a This is Money analysis of DVSA MOT records (October 2024) counted 491 UK Model X cars over 100,000 miles (This is Money). It gives no battery figures.
- As a rule of thumb for all EVs, ADAC expects at least 92% at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, 80% at 200,000 km (ADAC).

5. What does a Model X battery replacement cost in the UK?
Tesla doesn't publish a UK price for a Model X battery, so we don't quote a Tesla figure. The dated UK figures we found:
| What | Reported cost | Source (date) |
|---|---|---|
| Out-of-warranty replacement battery, Model S / Model X: quotes customers report receiving | £17,000–£19,000 + VAT | LKQ Electriq / Cedar Electric (2025-07-22 (updated 2026-04-19)) |
| Labour and parts on top (same table) | £500–£2,500 + VAT | LKQ Electriq / Cedar Electric |
| Example battery repair by an independent specialist (model not stated) | £5,300 | LKQ Electriq / Cedar Electric |
| For comparison only: US out-of-warranty replacement, all EVs | US$5,000–US$16,000 (US prices, not UK) | Recurrent (2024-12-03) |
- The UK figures come from LKQ Electriq (Cedar Electric), an independent EV repair specialist, describing what its customers say they were quoted for Model S or Model X packs. They aren't Tesla list prices, and prices change with the pack's condition, whether it's new or refurbished, and availability.
- A failing pack doesn't always mean a new pack: the same company repairs and overhauls Model S and Model X batteries with a 12-month parts and labour warranty (LKQ Electriq / Cedar Electric). Get a written diagnosis and more than one quote.
- For a car outside its battery warranty, the price you pay should reflect this risk. Weigh a reported quote of £17,000–£19,000 + VAT against the asking price. Our EV battery replacement cost guide covers other models.
6. What to check at the viewing
- Warning messages: look for battery messages on the screen, such as "Maximum battery charge level reduced" or "Battery fuse requires replacement", which an independent UK specialist lists among battery warning signs (LKQ Electriq / Cedar Electric).
- Pack history: ask whether the battery has ever been replaced or repaired, and get the invoice. A replacement pack changes what the mileage means.
- Independent test: get an independent test such as AVILOO (AVILOO GmbH) and compare it with the table above. UK options and prices are on our UK battery test comparison, and the certificate guide explains the result.
- Warranty end date: check the Tesla app or ask Tesla with the VIN before you negotiate.

Model averages can't tell you about the car in front of you. An independent battery test (typically a short OBD plug-in test, some remote) gives an SoH figure and often a certificate you can use when negotiating.
- AVILOO – Independent OBD-based battery test (FLASH / Premium) with certificate; available via partners in the UK and EU.
- Generational – UK OBD plug-in test with certificate (SoH, range, remaining warranty, cell balance); sold through dealers and independent mobile testers.
- Moba – Postal OBD kit: you run the test yourself and post the box back for a digital battery certificate (Europe – check vehicle support and delivery country).

FAQ
What is the Tesla Model X battery warranty in the UK?
Tesla's European New Vehicle Limited Warranty (Europe region, including the UK; effective 8 July 2024) covers the Model X battery and drive unit for 8 years or 240,000 km (about 150,000 miles), whichever comes first, with at least 70% capacity retention. Tesla's UK support page lists the same 8 years / 150,000 miles / 70% figures for Model S and Model X. Cars bought earlier keep the terms that applied when they were bought; Electrek reported that early Model S/X terms had no capacity-loss guarantee.
How much does a Model X battery degrade?
Carla, a Swedish used-EV retailer, found an average of 92.5% on Model X cars tested after more than 100,000 km (sample size not published). Three Czech dealer AVILOO certificates at 140,874–182,749 km read 83.3%–86.8%. Bjørn Nyland's capacity tests on two cars read 81.7%–93.5% at 99,000–192,000 km. All single-car figures are n=1; there is no UK-only dataset yet.
How much does a Tesla Model X battery replacement cost in the UK?
Tesla does not publish a UK price. The only dated UK figure we found is from LKQ Electriq (Cedar Electric), a UK independent EV specialist, which in July 2025 (updated April 2026) said its customers report being quoted £17,000–£19,000 plus VAT for an out-of-warranty Model S or Model X battery, with £500–£2,500 plus VAT for labour and parts. Treat that as a reported quote range, not a list price. Independent specialists also offer pack repair.
Are there battery recalls on the Tesla Model X in the UK?
DVSA's recall file (downloaded October 2026) lists no high-voltage battery recall for the Model X. Its Model X recalls cover seats, airbags, the parking brake, the media unit memory chip, brake-fluid sensing, eCall, rear-view camera and similar non-battery items. Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration anyway.
Which Model X battery size do I have?
EV Database lists packs from a software-limited 60D (62 kWh usable of a 75 kWh pack) through 75D (72.5 kWh), 90D (85.5 kWh), 100D/Long Range (95 kWh usable) and Long Range Plus (98 kWh usable). Later Dual Motor and Plaid cars are listed at about 95 kWh usable. Compare a test result only with the same pack.
