How to check a used Ford Mustang Mach-E battery: health, warranty and recalls (UK)
Published · Last updated · based on 21 sourced Mach-E data points and 22 sources
The Mustang Mach-E has been sold in the UK since 2021 with two main battery sizes and, from late 2023, a cheaper LFP battery. This guide covers how to tell which battery a car has, the UK battery recalls, Ford's 8-year warranty, how far to trust the car's own battery figure and how a result compares with AVILOO's data from 6,098 tested cars.
All figures with method and date: used Mach-E battery data. Going to a viewing? Make a printable list of questions for the seller.
1. Identify the battery
| Version | Usable battery | Nominal | Notes | Available to order (EV Database, UK) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Range (RWD/AWD) | 68.0 kWh | 75.7 kWh | 288 cells | April 2021 – November 2023 | EV Database |
| Extended Range (RWD/AWD), early cars | 88.0 kWh | 98.7 kWh | 376 cells | from April 2021 | EV Database |
| GT (2021 on) | 88.0 kWh | 98.7 kWh | same pack as Extended Range | from November 2021 | EV Database |
| Premium / Extended Range, later cars | 91.0 kWh | 98.7 kWh | more of the same pack made usable; the 2025 Premium RWD listing shows 88.0 kWh again | from December 2023 | EV Database; EV Database |
| Select Standard Range | 72.6 kWh | 78.0 kWh (as listed) | LFP chemistry | from November 2023 | EV Database |
EV Database UK listings, checked 2026-11-02. Usable capacity can differ between listings of the same pack.
- The Standard Range battery holds about a quarter less usable energy than the Extended Range, so check the advert, V5C and specification, and compare a test result only with the same battery.
- LFP batteries (Select from late 2023) age differently from the earlier packs, and AVILOO's dataset groups all versions together. We have no separate test results for the LFP Mach-E yet.
2. Check the recalls
DVSA's recall file, downloaded 2026-10-31, lists three recalls that involve the Mach-E's high-voltage battery system (DVSA):
- R/2022/194 (29 June 2022): the high-voltage battery main contactors may overheat. The fix is a software update. It lists 6,535 UK vehicles built 23 September 2020 – 24 May 2022.
- R/2025/161 (30 April 2025): on 123 vehicles the software from the earlier recall may not have been installed correctly, so the contactor can still overheat, which can mean loss of power or a car that won't start. The fix is to update and check the software.
- R/2026/411 (27 October 2026): on cars that had a replacement battery control module fitted, the car can overestimate the battery's state of health, so the dashboard could show about 10% charge when the battery is nearly empty. DVSA lists 2 UK vehicles built in 2024, and the fix software was not yet available when the recall was published. If a seller says a battery module was replaced, an independent test is worth more than the car's own figure.
R/2025/293 (16,155 vehicles built March 2020 – May 2025) is about the 12V battery: after an unexpected 12V discharge the door locks can stay in their last state. Other Mach-E recalls (eCall, glass roof, windscreen, seat belt, headlamps, rear camera, SYNC and others) don't involve the battery. Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration (GOV.UK), and ask for proof the battery recalls were done.
3. Check the battery warranty
Ford UK: Mustang Mach-E battery covered for 8 years or 160,000 km (100,000 miles) from first registration, with a 70% capacity threshold. (Ford UK, checked 2026-10-20)
- Count the 8 years from the first registration date on the V5C. UK cars started arriving in 2021, so on most used cars the 100,000-mile limit is what to watch.
- Ask for the Ford service history and the recall work above, and check with a Ford dealer using the VIN.
- Our battery warranty checker works out the time and mileage left from the registration date.
4. Get a battery reading you can trust
- On the 7 UK dealer AVILOO certificates we found, the car's own battery figure (BMS) was within 1.6 points of AVILOO's independent result, and it was higher than AVILOO's on 4 of them. That's a small sample (n=1 each), so treat the car's own number as a useful sign, not proof.
- Owners read the battery with OBD apps such as Car Scanner with an OBDLink adapter (one UK owner reported 93.5% at 193,121 km this way, MachEForum.com owner forum). That is still the car's own estimate, and recall R/2026/411 shows it can be wrong after a battery control module replacement.
- An AVILOO battery test (AVILOO GmbH) measures the battery independently. UK options and prices are on our UK battery test comparison, and our certificate guide explains how to read the result.
5. Compare the result with other Mach-Es
- 50,000 km (≈31,069 mi): median 95.1%, central 99% of cars 89.5%–97.8%
- 100,000 km (≈62,137 mi): median 93.5%, central 99% of cars 87.1%–96.7%
- 150,000 km (≈93,206 mi): median 92.5%, central 99% of cars 85.3%–96.1%
AVILOO 2026 data, 6,098 Mach-E tests, all battery versions grouped (AVILOO GmbH).
- A result well below the median at similar mileage is worth questioning, and one near or below the bottom of the range should be checked with an independent test before you buy.
- For comparison, AVILOO's median at 100,000 km is 91.9% for the Tesla Model Y, 92.5% for the Volkswagen ID.4, 92.7% for the Škoda Enyaq iV.
- Recurrent's US data shows Mach-Es keeping about 97.0% of their original range after 3 and 5 years (Recurrent). That is range in US conditions, not measured battery health, so use it as a trend only.
- As a rule of thumb for all EVs, ADAC expects at least 92% at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, 80% at 200,000 km (ADAC).
- Compare the Mach-E with similar SUVs on the battery degradation chart, or get a quick estimate with the battery health estimator.

6. Battery replacement cost
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new Mach-E battery, from Ford or an independent specialist, so we don't quote one. Inside 8 years and 100,000 miles, a battery that falls below 70% capacity is covered by Ford's warranty (Ford UK). General UK figures are in our EV battery replacement cost guide.

Model averages can't tell you about the car in front of you. An independent battery test (typically a short OBD plug-in test, some remote) gives an SoH figure and often a certificate you can use when negotiating.
- AVILOO – Independent OBD-based battery test (FLASH / Premium) with certificate; available via partners in the UK and EU.
- Generational – UK OBD plug-in test with certificate (SoH, range, remaining warranty, cell balance); sold through dealers and independent mobile testers.
- Moba – Postal OBD kit: you run the test yourself and post the box back for a digital battery certificate (Europe – check vehicle support and delivery country).

FAQ
What is the Ford Mustang Mach-E battery warranty in the UK?
Ford UK covers the Mach-E high-voltage battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km) from first registration, whichever comes first, against capacity falling below 70%. UK sales started in 2021, so most used UK cars are still inside the 8 years; mileage is usually what runs out first on high-mileage cars.
What size battery does a used Mach-E have?
UK cars from 2021–2023 have either the Standard Range battery (75.7 kWh nominal, about 68 kWh usable) or the Extended Range battery (98.7 kWh nominal, 88 kWh usable on early cars and up to 91 kWh on later ones). From late 2023 the Select Standard Range uses an LFP battery of about 72.6 kWh usable, according to EV Database. Check the specification and V5C, and compare health results only with the same battery.
How much does a Mach-E battery degrade?
AVILOO's 2026 data from 6,098 Mach-E tests has a median battery health of 93.5% at 100,000 km, with the central 99% of cars between 87.1% and 96.7%. Recurrent's US data shows about 97.0% of original range kept after 3 and 5 years; that is range, not measured battery health.
How much does a Mach-E battery replacement cost?
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new Mach-E battery from Ford or an independent specialist, so we do not quote one. A battery that falls below 70% within 8 years and 100,000 miles is covered by Ford's warranty. General UK figures are in our EV battery replacement cost guide.
Are there Mach-E battery recalls in the UK?
Yes. DVSA lists R/2022/194 and R/2025/161 for high-voltage battery main contactors that may overheat (a software fix), and R/2026/411 (October 2026) for a small number of cars with a replacement battery control module that can overestimate battery health. Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration.
