Audi Q4 e-tron battery size, warranty, recall and health check (UK)
Published · Last updated · based on 22 sourced Q4 e-tron data points and 30 sources
The Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron have been sold in the UK since 2021 with two battery sizes. This guide covers which pack a car has, the October 2026 battery recall, what Audi's 8-year warranty covers, how far to trust the car's own battery figure, and how a test result compares with the 16 UK dealer test certificates we found.
All figures with method and date: used Audi Q4 e-tron battery data. Going to a viewing? Make a printable list of questions for the seller.
1. Battery size: 52 or 77 kWh
| Version (model year) | Usable battery | Nominal | Cells | Available to order (EV Database, UK) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q4 35 e-tron (MY21-23), rear-wheel drive | 52.0 kWh | 55.0 kWh | NMC, 192 pouch cells (96s2p) | July 2021 – November 2022 | EV Database |
| Q4 40 e-tron (MY21-23), rear-wheel drive | 76.6 kWh | 82.0 kWh | NMC, 288 cells (96s3p) | July 2021 – January 2024 | EV Database |
| Q4 50 e-tron quattro (MY21-23), four-wheel drive | 76.6 kWh | 82.0 kWh | same pack | July 2021 – January 2024 | EV Database |
| Q4 45 e-tron (MY24-26), rear-wheel drive | 77.0 kWh | 82.0 kWh | NMC, 288 cells (96s3p) | January 2024 – June 2026 | EV Database |
EV Database UK listings, checked 2026-11-04. Audi UK quotes 51.5 kWh net for the 35 e-tron. Test certificates usually print "52 kWh" or "77 kWh".
- Small or large pack? The 35 e-tron is the only UK version with the small pack in this table. Every 40, 45 and 50 quattro has the large one. If the badge has been removed, the V5C, the advert's spec or the car's own menu will tell you.
- The 2026 update adds a new size. The updated Q4 e-tron for model year 2027 is listed with a 63 kWh (59 kWh usable) pack for the 150 kW rear-wheel-drive versions and the 82 kWh (77 kWh usable) pack for the others (Electric has gone Audi). Those cars are too new for our data.
- Our UK certificates cover both packs: 3 × 52 kWh and 13 × 77 kWh. Compare a result with cars that have the same pack where you can (table in section 5).
2. Check for recalls, including the 2026 battery recall
The October 2026 battery recall (charge to 80%). Audi has recalled Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron cars whose battery cells came from SK Battery Manufacturing's plant in Komárom, Hungary. The cause is not yet known, and charging above 80% may lead to overheating spreading between cells (thermal propagation), so owners are told to limit charging to 80% until a fix is ready (NHTSA).
- The US filing is NHTSA 26V698, Audi code 93SK: 9,048 cars from model years 2024–2025 (Electrek). Germany's KBA lists it as 17222R: 12,734 cars worldwide, built 30 November 2023 – 26 June 2025, 1 of them in Germany. About 3,700 are in other markets that the reports don't name (electrive.com).
- DVSA's recall file, which we re-downloaded on 2026-11-04, had no Q4 battery row and nothing for 93SK (DVSA). We don't know yet whether any UK cars are affected.
- If the car was built from late 2023 to mid-2025, ask an Audi Centre to check the VIN for campaign 93SK before you buy. If it is affected, ask what the charging limit means for your daily range until it's fixed. A 77 kWh car charged to 80% has about 62 kWh to use.
DVSA's file lists these other Q4 e-tron recalls, neither of them for the battery:
| DVSA ref (Audi ref) | Launched | Problem and fix | UK vehicles · built |
|---|---|---|---|
| R/2025/098 (454R) | 28/02/2025 | Parking brake / park indicator: software update to the ABS control unit. | 17,397 · 20/05/2021 – 17/04/2023 |
| R/2024/224 (45BF) | 24/05/2024 | Electronic stability control (ESC) unit. | 7 · 02/04/2024 – 17/04/2024 |
Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration (GOV.UK) and ask the seller for proof that recall work and software updates were done.
3. Check the battery warranty
- Audi UK covers the battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles. If an Audi Centre measures the capacity below 70% during that time, Audi repairs or replaces it so it is back to at least 70% (Audi UK).
- Gradual loss above 70% isn't covered, and a repaired battery is only guaranteed to be back above 70%, not "as new".
- Audi Approved Used electric cars under 8 years old come with a battery health certificate, and an Audi Centre can diagnose the battery's state of health (Audi UK). Buying privately? Ask for one anyway.
- Count the 8 years from first registration (on the V5C): a car first registered in 2021 is covered until 2029, unless it has passed 100,000 miles. Our battery warranty checker works out the time and mileage left.
4. Get a battery reading you can trust
- On the 16 UK AVILOO certificates that also print the car's own figure (from its battery management system, BMS), the two were within 2.5 points. The car's own figure was higher on 13 and lower on 3, and on 2 low-mileage cars it read above 100% (101.0% vs AVILOO 99.7%; 102.0% vs AVILOO 99.5%). On the Q4 the car's own figure tends to be a little optimistic. Use it as a rough guide, not a test.
- Owners on the MOTOR-TALK forum read the battery's "maximum energy content" with an OBD app and divide it by the usable capacity when new (about 76.6–77 kWh for the large pack). Their readings were 92.8%–95.8% at 33,500–52,000 km (MOTOR-TALK forum). This figure moves with temperature and charge level.
- An independent test (AVILOO GmbH) gives a figure you can compare with the table below. UK options and prices: UK battery test comparison. To read the result: certificate guide.
5. Compare the result with other Q4 e-trons
- AVILOO median (17,814 Q4 e-tron tests, both packs grouped): 95.0% at 50,000 km, 92.4% at 100,000 km and 90.6% at 150,000 km (AVILOO GmbH).
- The 16 UK dealer certificates (≈5,198–65,782 miles) read 91.7%–99.8%: 91.7%–93.8% for the 3 small-pack cars and 93.9%–99.8% for the 13 large-pack cars. The lowest, 91.7%, was a 52 kWh car at 49,968 miles; the highest-mileage car (65,782 miles) had 93.9%.
- A UK result clearly below about 91.7% at similar mileage is worth questioning. Get the car tested again or ask an Audi Centre to check it.
- As a rule of thumb for all EVs, ADAC expects at least 92% at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, 80% at 200,000 km (ADAC).
- The Q4 shares its platform with the VW ID.4, Skoda Enyaq and Cupra Born. Compare them on the battery degradation chart, or get a quick estimate with the battery health estimator.

6. Battery replacement cost (UK)
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new Q4 e-tron battery from Audi, so we don't quote one. Audi UK says its battery components are designed to be repaired and that a full pack replacement is unlikely (Audi UK). Within 8 years and 100,000 miles, a battery measured below 70% by an Audi Centre is covered. For a car near the end of its cover, get a written quote from an Audi Centre before you buy. General UK figures are in our EV battery replacement cost guide.
