How to check a used Volvo EX30 battery: size, warranty, recalls and health (UK)
Published · Last updated · based on 20 sourced EX30 data points and 21 sources
The EX30 is Volvo's small electric SUV, sold in the UK from 2023 with either a 51 kWh LFP or a 69 kWh NMC battery. Early cars were built only in China; production also started in Ghent, Belgium in April 2025 (electrive.com). On the 7 UK dealer AVILOO certificates we found, results ranged from 96.5%–99.4%. The bigger questions on a used EX30 are the high-voltage battery overheating recall (and the temporary 70% charge limit), how far to trust the car's own battery figure, and the 8-year warranty. This guide covers each check.

1. Identify the battery: 51 kWh LFP or 69 kWh NMC
| Version | Usable battery | Nominal | Chemistry / cells | Available to order (EV Database, UK) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EX30 Single Motor | 49.0 kWh | 51.0 kWh | LFP, 120 cells (120s1p) | June 2023 – May 2026 | EV Database |
| EX30 Single Motor Extended Range | 65.0 kWh | 69.0 kWh | NMC, 107 cells (107s1p) | June 2023 – May 2026 | EV Database |
| EX30 Twin Motor Performance | 65.0 kWh | 69.0 kWh | NMC, 107 cells (107s1p) | June 2023 – May 2026 | EV Database |
EV Database UK listings, checked 2026-11-05. Test certificates usually print the nominal figure ("51 kWh" or "69 kWh"). EV Database lists MY27 successors (P5, P5 Long Range, P8 AWD); those cars are too new for our data.
- The badge usually tells you the pack: Single Motor (without "Extended Range") is the 51 kWh LFP; Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance share the 69 kWh NMC pack.
- All 7 of our UK dealer certificates are for the 69 kWh NMC pack. We have one French AVILOO certificate for the 51 kWh LFP (CRVO Lyon).
- Early UK cars were Chinese-built; Ghent production started in April 2025 (electrive.com). The pack sizes above are the same either way on EV Database's listings.
2. Check the battery recall (70% charge limit)
DVSA's recall file (DVSA; same EX30 rows in the 2026-10-31 and 2026-11-04 downloads) lists one high-voltage battery recall for the EX30:
| Recall | Launched | UK cars | Built | Problem / remedy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R/2025/559 R10360 (superseded from R10355) | 22/01/2026 | 10,577 EX30 + 1 EX30 Cross Country | EX30 06/09/2023 – 22/08/2025; EX30CC 15/05/2025 – 15/05/2025 | After charging, risk of an overheating high-voltage battery cell → fire risk. Volvo: limiting max state of charge to 70% eliminates the overheating risk; do not leave the car unattended charging in buildings or covered areas; if warnings appear during or after charging, seek assistance. HV battery modules are inspected and replaced. |
| R/2024/205 R10273 | 10/05/2024 | 7,569 EX30 | 06/09/2023 – 30/04/2024 | Display (DHU) software – screen can enter "test mode" at start-up (not battery). |
| R/2026/043 R10357 | 10/02/2026 | 1,493 EX30 | 05/11/2024 – 02/04/2025 | Front seat recliner welding (not battery). |
| R/2026/386 R10396 | 21/10/2026 | 26,909 EX30 + 358 EX30CC | EX30 04/09/2023 – 16/07/2026; EX30CC 05/03/2025 – 02/09/2026 | Front seat head-cushion fastenings (not battery). |
At a viewing:
- Run the free GOV.UK recall check on the registration (GOV.UK) and the VIN look-up on Volvo UK's recall page (Volvo Cars UK).
- Ask for proof that campaign R10360 (R/2025/559) is complete – invoice, service record or Volvo retailer confirmation. Some cars had modules replaced under this recall; ask what was done.
- Look at the charge limit in the car. If it is stuck at 70%, ask why, and allow for the reduced range until the work is finished (a 65 kWh usable pack limited to 70% has about 45.5 kWh to use).
- Volvo's displayed SoH has a tolerance, and a module swap can change the reading – don't treat the car's own figure alone as proof the recall is done.
3. Check the battery warranty
Volvo UK: high-voltage battery 8 years or 100,000 miles from first delivery, whichever comes first; repairs to return capacity to at least 70% of original if SoH drops below 70% due to a manufacturing or material defect. Vehicle warranty 3 years / 60,000 miles. (Volvo Cars UK, checked 2026-11-04)
- Count the 8 years from the first delivery date, which is usually the first registration date on the V5C. Even the first 2023 UK cars are covered until about 2031 if they're under 100,000 miles.
- Gradual loss above 70% isn't covered, and a repaired battery is only guaranteed to be back above 70%, not "as new".
- Ask for the Volvo service history and any recall work above, and confirm the warranty with a Volvo retailer using the VIN.
- Our battery warranty checker works out the time and mileage left from the registration date.
Volvo UK's warranty and recall pages blocked our automated download (HTTP 403) on 2026-11-04; we read them with a web fetch the same day.
4. Get a battery reading you can trust
- Don't trust the car's display alone. Volvo's displayed battery-health figure has a stated tolerance (owners on ex30forums.com quote about ±2.5% above 90%), and some cars had modules replaced under the overheating recall (Volvo EX30 Forum – ex30forums.com, Volvo EX30 Forum – ex30forums.com).
- On the 7 UK AVILOO certificates that also print the car's own BMS figure, the two were within about 1.5 points. The car's own figure was higher on 5, lower on 2 and the same on 0 (highest car reading 100.0% against AVILOO 99.4%).
- AVILOO lists FLASH-test support for the EX30 51 and 69 kWh packs (AVILOO GmbH). An independent test (AVILOO GmbH) gives a figure you can compare with the table below. UK options and prices: UK battery test comparison. To read the result: certificate guide.
5. Compare the result with other EX30s
- No AVILOO median is published for the EX30 itself. Every figure below is a single car (n=1).
- The 7 UK dealer AVILOO certificates (all 69 kWh NMC; 3,668–45,112 km, ≈2,279–28,031 miles) read 96.5%–99.4%. The lowest, 96.5%, was at 28,031 miles; the highest-mileage car (28,031 miles) had 96.5%.
- Two other AVILOO certificates: France, 51 kWh LFP, 98.6% at 9,086 km (CRVO Lyon); Norway, 69 kWh, 97.4% at 34,637 km (Motor Forum AS Oslo).
- 11 owner-reported car-display readings (ex30forums.com) ranged 92.5%–99.5% at 8,400–64,400 km. These are the car's own figure as posted by owners, not independent tests – treat them as examples only (Volvo EX30 Forum – ex30forums.com, Volvo EX30 Forum – ex30forums.com, Volvo EX30 Forum – ex30forums.com).
- A UK independent result clearly below about 96.5% at similar mileage is worth questioning. Get the car tested again or ask a Volvo retailer to check it, and confirm recall completion.
- As a rule of thumb for all EVs, ADAC expects at least 92% at 50,000 km, 88% at 100,000 km, 84% at 150,000 km, 80% at 200,000 km (ADAC).
- Compare the EX30 with similar cars on the battery degradation chart, or get a quick estimate with the battery health estimator.

6. Battery replacement cost (UK)
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new EX30 battery, so we don't quote one. Inside 8 years and 100,000 miles a battery that falls below 70% because of a manufacturing or material defect is covered by Volvo UK (Volvo Cars UK), and recall work is free. For an out-of-warranty car, get a written quote from a Volvo retailer before you buy. General UK figures are in our EV battery replacement cost guide.

FAQ
What size battery does a Volvo EX30 have?
Two packs on EV Database's UK listings (checked 5 November 2026). The Single Motor has 51.0 kWh nominal / 49.0 kWh usable LFP (120 cells, 120s1p). The Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance share a 69.0 kWh nominal / 65.0 kWh usable NMC pack (107 cells, 107s1p). Both were available to order from June 2023 to May 2026.
Is there a Volvo EX30 battery recall in the UK?
Yes. DVSA lists R/2025/559 (launched 22 January 2026, Volvo campaign R10360, superseded from R10355): after charging there is a risk of an overheating high-voltage battery cell that could lead to a fire. Volvo says limiting the maximum state of charge to 70% eliminates the overheating risk; do not leave the car unattended charging in buildings or covered areas; if warnings appear during or after charging, seek assistance; HV battery modules are inspected and replaced. UK cars: 10,577 EX30 built 6 September 2023 – 22 August 2025, plus 1 EX30 Cross Country. Run the GOV.UK recall check and Volvo UK's VIN look-up.
What is the Volvo EX30 battery warranty in the UK?
Volvo UK covers the high-voltage battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles from delivery to the first owner, whichever comes first. If state of health drops below 70% because of a manufacturing or material defect, an authorised Volvo retailer repairs or replaces it to bring capacity back to at least 70%. The warranty transfers to later owners.
How much does a Volvo EX30 battery degrade?
There is no AVILOO median for the EX30. The 7 UK dealer AVILOO certificates we found (all 69 kWh NMC) read 96.5%–99.4% at 2,279–28,031 miles. Two other AVILOO certificates (France 51 kWh LFP, Norway 69 kWh) read 97.4%–98.6%. 11 owner-reported car-display readings ranged 92.5%–99.5%. Every figure is a single car (n=1), not an average.
Can I trust the EX30's own battery-health figure?
Treat it as a rough guide only. Volvo's displayed figure has a stated tolerance (owners on the EX30 forum quote about ±2.5% above 90%), and some cars had modules replaced under the overheating recall. On the UK AVILOO certificates that also print the car's own BMS figure, the two were within about 1.5 points. Ask for proof of recall completion, and prefer an independent test.
How much does an EX30 battery replacement cost in the UK?
We have not found a verifiable, dated UK price for a new EX30 battery, so we do not quote one. Inside 8 years and 100,000 miles a battery below 70% due to a manufacturing or material defect is covered by Volvo UK, and recall work is free.
